This is the first entry of a series of posts we are going to dedicate to our favourite Sherry wine. Sherry is a wine of Spanish origin with a distinctive nutty taste named after the province of Jerez de la Frontera, in Andalusia, Spain, where it is elaborated. Specifically, the area where it is made includes Jerez de la Frontera, Puerto de Santa María and San Lucar de Barrameda in the province of Cádiz. This is a ‘fortified’ wine, meaning that it has extra alcohol content. There are several varieties of Sherry wine: fino, manzanilla, amontillado, oloroso, palo cortado, cream sherry, Pedro Ximénez and brandy.

Solera 1847Our first stop is at Gozález Byass winery to talk about Solera 1847. This excellent sherry wine, with DO Jerez – Xérès – Sherry is named in after the winery founder’s son first birthday. Highly acclaimed, its many awards include Critics Challenge 2011, Gold. San Francisco International Competition 2011, Bronze. International Wines & Spirits Competition 2011, Bronze. Challenge International Du Vin 2011, Bronze. Wine Enthusiast 2010, 91 points.

It belongs to the ‘oloroso’ variety. Oloroso wines are of a darker colour, and are produced by oxidative aging. The flor yeast is suppressed at the early stages of its elaboration, so, as the wine ages it becomes darker and stronger.

González Byass Solera 1847 is a sweet oloroso, made from a blend of 75% Palomino and Pedro Ximénez grapes and it is left to age for 8 or 9 years. It includes complex and clear notes of ash, chocolate, earth and spice to the nose. Its colour is dark mahogany, and in the mouth it is sweet and rich, which makes of it an excellent aperitif. It is recommended to be served between 6ºC and 10ºC.
